Recommend Books from the Elders Print E-mail
Joseph Addison an English essayist, poet, and man of letters once penned the following: Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn.

The Board of Elders would like to recommend the following books for your reading pleasure, and most importantly, for you to pass along the legacy provided by the authors.

Happy Reading!

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World
by Joanna Weaver

The topic of this book is "Finding Intimacy with God in the Busyness of Life"

This book is one I will use as a reference long in to the future.  It was very understandable, and I related to it from beginning to end.  Throughout the book Weaver states the obvious in a manner that at times seems new and profound.  She restates that which we may typically overlook and relates it in an understandable way; "Busyness, by itself, breeds distraction"; "Salvation isn't about what I do; it's about what Christ did."  Weaver uses humor as she reveals her own experiences to relate to the popular Biblical story of Mary and Martha.

This book can be studied and read as an individual or as a group Bible Study.

Having a Mary Spirit
by Joanna Weaver

The topic of this book is "Allowing God to Change Us From the Inside Out"

A companion book to Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World.

I appreciated the honesty with which Joanna Weaver shares the challenges of her own life and how she finds peace through scripture.  I found myself underlining more pages than not as I found so much of her insight captivating.   Her written expressions are thought-provoking.  This is a book that provides direction of personal reflection.

Can be used for individual study or as a group - or simply read for the insight Weaver has to share.

Mere Christianity
by C.S. Lewis

I consider this book to be an incredibly insightful book on the basics of life, human nature and Christianity.  Lewis was previously an atheist so he has a gift of explaining in a very pragmatic way how he came to be a Christian.  He takes the reader on a logical journey through various topics that can be confusing like; free will, salvation, forgiveness, pride, grace, charity, hope, faith and God's timing.  I revisit the notes I took while reading the book occasionally because the thoughts he expresses are so clarifying and grounding that I find comfort in them.  I trust that anyone who reads this book will be blessed by it's insight and comforted by the foundations it offers.  I highly recommend it!

Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, & Priorities of a Winning Life
by Tony Dungy

Coaches are typically viewed as hot headed, demanding, and hard to please.  Tony Dungy breaks every stereotype of the typical coach and this best selling book gives the reader complete insight into the quiet strength in Tony's life, his relationship with Jesus Christ.

This memoir focused book is an enjoyable read for football fans and Christians alike.
