"Tell them to go after God ... to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous ... gaining life that is truly life.
— 1 Timothy 6:17b-19 (TMSG)
Here you will find information about stewardship to assist you in your understanding of God's gifts of time, talent and financial resources and how we can share them in witness to the love and power of Jesus Christ.
About Stewardship
We have been involved with Geist Christian Church's stewardship team for several year, and in that time, we have learned some important lessons:
First, we have learned that there are a lot of misconceptions about stewardship. Some people feel that being a good steward is only about money, while others are convinced that stewardship is something we only worry about once a year, and that, as long as we fill out a pledge card, we're done with stewardship.
Second, we have also learned that many people are uncomfortable discussing the financial aspects of the Church"s ministry. Our pocketbooks are constantly under attack in our daily lives. Whether we are paying the electric bill, making a donation to our favorite charity, considering buying a car or a house, or just listening to the radio or watching television, someone always wants something from us. For many of us, it seems as if church ought to be the one place where we don't have to listen to appeals for contributions.
We hope that as you listen to Randy's sermons over the next few weeks and consider the information you receive at home, you will begin to look at stewardship in a different light. We hope you understand that there is more to stewardship than writing a check or setting up an automatic withdrawal on your bank account. When we speak of "resources," we don't just mean dollars. Geist christian Church needs your "talents," and that is as much about your skills, your abilities, and your heart as it is about your checkbook. Without the former, the latter will not mean much. A wealthy church without an active membership will accomplish very little.
God calls each of us to ministry, and we are blessed to be a part of God's work. As a part of this ministry, we are obliged to reflect on the gifts we have been given, and this is a process we should engage in year-round. How have you used your gifts to answer God's call? It is not a question that can be answered simply with a pledge card or with a check.
Consider the words that form the theme for this year's enlistment program from 1 Timothy: "do good...be rich in helping others...be extravagantly generous." Stewardship is not about what we give up or give away - it is about what we gain as we follow Christ's example of generosity and love.

Daily Stewardship Devotionals
Our sister denomination, the United church of Christ, has provided 30 daily devotional reflections that provide inspirational moments for the reader. A few of them refer to the UCC but fit our stewardship journey quite well. We encourage you to have the devotions emailed to you daily or go online to read them.To sign up for the emails or to read the meditations go to uccvitality. org
