49 Youth & Adults Serve Philadelphia and Chicago
Two summer mission trips for CYF and Chi Rho
“Our mission work in Philadelphia was one of the most powerful weeks our Group has ever experienced together,” noted associate minister Mark Briley upon returning from the senior high youth mission trip. Urban areas of Philadelphia and Chicago were the destinations this summer for CYF and Chi Rho youth mission trips
“The work we did and the people we served reminded us that we live in our own ‘bubble’ and the power that comes when we move out of that bubble and open ourselves to those who are different from us,” he added.
The CYF youth mission at “Bring the Hope” in early July was to serve in shelters, camps and neighborhood projects. For “Philly” fun, the group joined in the “Rocky Run” to the top of the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and visited historic sites of Philadelphia.
Middle School Youth to “Love Out Loud”
Upon the return of the Philadelphia group, 23 Chi Rho students and chaperones jumped into the same van rentals and headed for Chicago. Using a Jaci Velasquez song to inspire their theme, the group set out to “Love Out Loud” the residents of Chicago.
They spent the week serving at YMCA camps and working with seniors and the homeless of Chicago. While there, they enjoyed some of Chicago’s sites, took in a White Sox baseball game and stopped at famous Gino’s East for Chicago deep dish pizza.
Continuous prayers and financial support by the congregation are deeply appreciated by youth and leaders, noted Brooke Robbins associate youth director. “When you see someone pay $50 for a pie or a car wash in the name of youth mission work, you realize that the youth have found an amazingly supportive community in which to serve,” Robbins added.
A recap service by the CYF mission trip participants will be held during the ALTARed youth worship experience on August 10. The Chi Rho recap service will be August 3.
